The Plan
I want to create a totally organic vegetable patch. I watched that Jamie Oliver series “jamie at home”, I thought the what he was doing, granted on a much larger scale than what I am currently attempting, is a really good idea. I currently have at my disposal 3×1m^2 raised beds as well as a greenhouse and small 4 tier contraption with a cover (don’t know it’s name).
I had a think about it and decided on a group of vegetables that I enjoy eating, there is no point in growing things that I won’t eat. I wanted to keep it down to about 15 vegetables, I have a fair amount of room but I don’t want it to get out of hand. I am also growing a bunch of herbs as both companions to the veg and for their own use in the kitchen.
| Vegetable List | Herb List |
|---|---|
| Garlic | Thyme |
| Chilli | Parsley |
| Peppers | Basil |
| Tomatoes | Dill |
| Broad Beans | Mint |
| Carrots | Sage |
| Lettuce | Corriander |
| Mixed Salad | |
| Peas | |
| White & Spring Onions | |
| Sweetcorn | |
| Potatoes | |
| Parsnips |
The majority of the seeds came from a seed provider (Marshalls) however things like the Potatoes, Garlic and Chilli just come from what’s left over in the kitchen. Every bag of potatoes you get always has a few small little useless ones, not big enough to use for chips or jacket potatoes. These little ones will soon be sprouting and can be used to grow a whole load of potatoes later. Garlic and Chilli tends to be something I pick up from the local Asian/World foods store, you tend to get the best value for money and they tend to be much better for growing with as well. Last year I grew a few gloves of garlic and chilli plants, unfortunately I went on holiday and forgot to get them looked after so I lost all but one of the chilli plants. The herbs all come from local garden centres and other such stores, I think I may have even picked some up from ASDA.
